Wedding Rules that You Can Break

Yes, it's true there are a lot of traditions when it comes to weddings, but things have changed too. There are many wedding rules that you can break.

1. The bride's parents pay for the wedding.
Maybe your mom and dad want to pay for every single thing, but, unlike in the past where the bride's family was expected to foot the whole bill, they're in no way obligated to now. Grooms' parents and the couples themselves chip in nearly as often as brides' parents do. It just depends on your family's situation.

2. You must wear a long, white gown.
Sure, most brides go the long white or ivory route, but for your wedding day attire, anything goes: from a retro short dress to a silver, slinky sheath to a black pantsuit. As long as you feel fabulous in your outfit, it can be any color or style. You can even skip the veil. If you'd prefer that your look pleases the crowd but aren't willing to go totally traditional, try working in a hint of color via a dress sash, your shoes, jewelry or a hair accessory or opting for a tea-length dress.

3. The first time you see your groom on your wedding day should be at your ceremony.
You can spend every minute with your groom before the ceremony. In fact, many couples who decided to wait until the ceremony to see each other would've preferred to have the inevitably emotional experience in private rather than in front of all of their guests. Photographers are happy to capture the moment you first see each other before the ceremony, so take photos then.

Pink and Gold Wedding Ideas

A rose-pink or baby-pink and gold combination will be suitable for a wedding with a vintage, classic, feminine, spring or country look and feel. It is softer on the eyes and very romantic. A dusty pink that is darker, but dull, is great for a more dramatic ambience, while it is still very girly and rustic. Cerise, or hot pink, and gold is great for an urban, modern, vibrant couple that love bursts of colour. This last option just cries out for rebellion and fun, so embrace your theme if you choose these colours. In all cases, the gold adds style and bling, and balances out the femininity of the pink.

Wedding Monograms and Words

Giant letters and words spelt out in wood, wire or metal are gorgeous. They suit whimsical, funky, retro or vintage styles of weddings and can be used to convey messages without, literally, spelling everything out.

If you are sticking to monograms, or letters, you will likely choose your initials and, possibly, an ampersand (the symbol “&”) between them. If you opt for words, choose words that communicate the mood and feel of the day (e.g. love, family, fun, passion, hope, home, and so on).

Don’t Forget to Sign the Guestbook

The guest book may not seem like a very integral part of your wedding day, and most of the time people forget to sign it, or don’t make the effort. The truth is, though it might not seem like a big deal, having a memory like that is priceless. You’ll love being able to sit down later and enjoy reading through the personal messages and well-wishes. The best thing is, you can keep it for years to come and still flip back through those cherished memories.

You could use that big old suitcase for storing other forms of well wishes: collect some old or new postcards and have guests pick their favourite, write a message and toss it in the case. Or perhaps cutout shapes to match your theme? Another popular and equally creative way to capture the day’s memories is by getting happy snaps of all your guests and compiling them in one place. Many photobooths offer services where guests can dress up or just put on a big smile, have their photo taken and then keep one copy for themselves, and one for the couple. You could either write on the back of the photo, or perhaps stick it into a nice scrapbook or pretty notebook, and prompt each guest to write a nice message next to their photo. This way, everybody gets to take home the memories.
